History of 2048

2048 was created in March 2014 by Gabriele Cirulli, a 19-year-old Italian web developer. Inspired by the games Threes! and 1024, Cirulli built 2048 over a single weekend as an open-source project. The game went viral within days, reaching millions of players and inspiring hundreds of clones and variations.
